Man bags 16year jail term for rape, assault in A’Ibom

Idorenyin Umoh, a 25-year-old resident of Utu Ikpe village in Akwa Ibom State’s Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, was sentenced to two years and fourteen years in prison for the charges of assault and rape, respectively.

Yesterday, an Akwa Ibom State High Court in Ikot Ekpene sentenced Umoh to prison for the rape of a 17-year-old girl in Utu Ikpe community.

Charles Ikpe was the trial judge.

Judge Ikpe delivered the verdict, finding Umoh guilty of both assault and rape charges and sentencing him to 16 years in jail.

The details of the case showed that the victim had been raped by the prisoner before, which is why she had always been afraid of him.

In the most recent incident, the girl and her companion were allegedly approached by Umoh while they were going to gather mango fruits behind their family’s compound in Utu Ikpe. Umoh allegedly threatened them, and the girl’s friend fled.

After the victim fled into a bush, the offender pursued her, struck her in the head with a stone at close range, subdued her, and sexually assaulted her in the bush.

In Utu Ikpe, on May 25, 2022, Idorenyin Umoh was taken into custody and the state government brought charges against him.
