Haaland brace seals knock-out stage UCL football for City
With two games remaining, Manchester City easily advanced to the round of 16, while Erling Haaland scored his 39th Champions League goal in 34 games against Young Boys.
The Norwegian striker skillfully converted a penalty in the 23rd minute after Sandro Lauper had fouled Matheus Nunes, despite having to leave the game at halftime due to an ankle injury.
Six minutes after the restart, he scored again from the edge of the box, just before Lauper was sent off for a second card for fouling Nathan Ake.
During the half, Haaland gave his shirt to Mohamed Ali Camara, the captain of Young Boys, in an odd exchange when the Guinean begged for it while the players were heading to the tunnel.
By then, Phil Foden had already added another goal, scoring after dodging Ulisses Garcia and latching onto Jack Grealish’s exquisite curling pass to the side of the penalty box.
With this victory, City advances to the next round of the competition for an outstanding 11th straight year and creates a new record for the most wins by an English team in Europe (18).
The victory also brought their 2023 home winning streak across all competitions to 23, one game short of the English record set by Sunderland in 1891 and 1892.
Competitors The next team to visit this stadium in the Premier League is Liverpool, who play on November 25. There’s a good chance that game will be significantly more competitive than this one was.
