37 Army job seekers die of stampede in Congo

Authorities in Brazzaville, the Republic of Congo’s capital, stated on Tuesday that a stampede killed 37 youths during an army recruitment drive in a stadium overnight.

The Congolese army said last week that it was hiring 1,500 people aged 18 to 25.

The “tragedy” killed 37 people and injured an unknown number, according to Prime Minister Anatole Collinet Makosso.

“A crisis unit has been set up under the authority of the prime minister,” a statement added.

Prospective recruits were directed to the Michel d’Ornano stadium in Brazzaville.

According to witnesses, many individuals were still inside the stadium when the surge began on Monday night.

According to residents, numerous people attempted to push their way through gates, causing several to be trampled in the rush.

The circumstances of the occurrence were still unknown at the time this report was filed.
