Anxiety as Ondo Assembly meets today, may replace Akeredolu with Deputy

Following the peace meeting with President Bola Tinubu in Abuja on Friday, members of the Ondo State House of Assembly will meet today (Tuesday) to examine the state’s polity.

According to a source in the Assembly, one of the major items on the Assembly agenda for today’s plenary was the decision on whether or not to proclaim the state deputy governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, as acting governor following the protracted absence of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.

The source said,

“The House plans to sit tomorrow (Tuesday) and Aiyedatiwa may be declared acting governor during the sitting. This is part of the outcome of the meeting with President Tinubu.”

When contacted on the matter, the Speaker of the House, Olamide Oladiji, said he was at a meeting.

“I will let you know whether the meeting will be held tomorrow because we are at a meeting now; after the meeting, I will let you know,” the Speaker stated.

As of the time of filing this report, there was no information from the Speaker.

According to Platinum Times, President Tinubu met with the leadership of the Assembly and the ruling All Progressives Congress in Ondo state last Friday in Abuja in an attempt to address the state’s long-running political problem.

Following the discussion with Tinubu, the Assembly announced that the motion to impeach the deputy for suspected gross misconduct had been shelved.

Aiyedatiwa also stated that he would put the past behind him and carry all stakeholders with him.

The conflict between Akeredolu and his deputy erupted after the governor returned from a lengthy medical vacation in Germany.

The Assembly’s proposal to impeach the deputy governor divided the lawmakers.

All participants in the Friday meeting were claimed to have agreed to maintain the status quo, which means Akeredolu should remain governor, Aiyedatiwa should remain deputy governor, and there should be no impeachment.
