UCL: Manchester United on brink of exit after sharing point with Galatasaray

Manchester United’s Champions League dreams took further hit when goalkeeper Andre Onana’s poor performance allowed Galatasaray to secure a draw in a classic match in Istanbul.

Erik ten Hag’s team did so much right and twice led by two goals, but errors from Onana gave Galatasaray lifelines, leaving United bottom of Group A and their chances of reaching the knockout round hanging in the balance before their final game at home against Bayern Munich.

If Copenhagen defeats Bayern Munich later on Wednesday at Allianz Arena, Manchester United will be eliminated from the competition with a game to spare, while they may still qualify for the Europa League.

United, like in their previous Champions League encounter in Copenhagen, took an early lead with to goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes inside the first 18 minutes.

Galatasaray came back into the game before halftime thanks to Onana’s clumsy attempt to stop Hakim Ziyech’s free-kick, but United appeared to have regained control in what was a hostile atmosphere when Scott McTominay turned in Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s cross 10 minutes after the interval to make it 3-1.

However, Ziyech was awarded a second goal from another free-kick following an even more egregious failure from Onana, who made a pathetic attempt to keep the ball out, before Galatasaray substitute Kerem Akturkoglu equalized with 19 minutes remaining.

Wilfried Zaha squandered a wonderful chance for Galatasaray, and Fernandes struck the crossbar as United’s Champions League destiny was put out of their hands.
