Ondo State’s acting governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, will be sworn in as the state governor today in Akure, the state capital, government sources told Platinum Times on Wednesday afternoon.
Platinum Times learned that Aiyedatiwa was already on his way to Akure from Igbokoda, where he had spent the holidays.
“Ondo State will be swearing in Lucky Aiyedatiwa as governor in Akure today. The swearing-in is slated to be held at the Cocoa Conference Hall in Akure. However, no time has been fixed yet for the event,” a top government source revealed to SaharaReporters.
Akeredolu died on Wednesday morning in a German hospital, prompting responses and condolences from around the world.
Platinum Times learned that Akeredolu was flown to Germany a few days ago to spend three months on medical leave between June and September 2023, but the hospital turned him down.
The governor died after a long fight with leukemia.
The 67-year-old politician returned to Nigeria in September following a three-month medical break in Germany and has only lately begun another when President Bola Tinubu asked him to hand over control to his deputy, Aiyedatiwa.
His deputy, Aiyedatiwa, had been acting as Governor.
Following his return to Nigeria in September, Akeredolu remained in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, and attempted to run his state from there, sparking popular uproar.
Akeredolu was diagnosed with leukemia in January, according to Platinum Times.
“The governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu has leukemia, he is really down,” one of the sources in the Alagbaka Government House revealed at that time.
Leukemia is a cancer of the blood caused by a rise in the number of white blood cells in the body.
