BREAKING: Supreme Court declares NNPP’s Abba Yusuf winner of Kano guber election

The ruling of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which declared Kano State’s election of Governor Kabir Yusuf invalid, has been overturned by the Supreme Court.

A five-person justice panel decided unanimously on Friday that the lower court misinterpreted the significance of the alleged 165,616 ballot paper deduction in Governor Yusuf’s favor.

Justice Inyang Okoro’s lead ruling also declared that the membership issue involving Governor Yusuf was a pre-election concern.

He argued that the conclusion that Governor Yusuf was not supported by the NNPP according to Section 177(c) of the Nigerian Constitution and Section 134(1) of the Electoral Act was not a conclusion of the electoral tribunal, but rather a simple observation that his name was absent from the membership list.

“This court has consistently held that the political party has the sole authority to nominate or sponsor a candidate for an election,” the judge held.
