Ghana sacks Chris Hughton as head coach after poor AFCON outing

Ghana has fired head coach Chris Hughton following the national team’s elimination from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Ghana Football Association confirmed his dismissal on Tuesday night.

The Black Stars were eliminated from the group stages after scoring only two points in three Group B matches.

Their modest dreams of qualifying as one of the four best third-placed teams were dashed on Tuesday after Mauritania defeated Algeria 1-0 in Bouaké.

“The Ghana Football Association wishes to announce that Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the senior National team with immediate effect.

“The Ghana Football Association will in the coming days provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars,” GFA’s official statement read in part.

Hughton’s backroom staff have all also been let go by the federation.
