AFCON: Senators, Reps to storm Cote d’Ivoire, cheer Super Eagles

The key officials of the National Assembly will travel to Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, ahead of the vital quarter-final match between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Angola’s Palancas Negras, to support the Nigerian squad at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON.
The Super Eagles are scheduled to meet Angola’s Palancas Negras in a quarterfinal match at the 34th AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire on Friday.
Senator Kawu Sumaila, chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, made the statement to journalists in Abuja on Thursday.
The Super Eagles overcame the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in the round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals at Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium.
The Senator stated that, in addition to the major executives, members of the National Assembly’s joint sports committees will travel to Abidjan to support the Super Eagles.
Kawu said,
“I am happy with the performance of the Nigerian team at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.
“The principal officers of the National Assembly and the two Committees on Sports will also be in Cote d’Ivoire to watch the quarter-finals with Angola.”
He also said the National Assembly would look at the fate of the coach of the Super Eagles, Jose Peseiro, after the tournament.
He said,
“We will look at it (the coach’s fate), after the competition, I am sure of victory for the Super Eagles against Angola.”
Both teams boast a youthful squad, with an average age of 26 years, as they set their sights on a crucial victory to secure a spot in the AFCON semifinals.
The winner between Nigeria and Angola on Friday at 6pm will, on February 7, 2024, be at the 40,000-capacity Peace Stadium in Bouake to face the winner of Cape Verde vs. South Africa to be played Friday night.
The AFCON tournament started on January 13, and its final will be played on February 11.
