Niger Coup: Senate disagree with Tinubu over Military intervention

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been warned by Northern senators in the 10th National Assembly not to use military intervention to resolve the conflict in Niger.

This was revealed in a statement released on Friday by Sen. Suleiman Sumaila, the representative for the Northern Senators Forum.

The group of senators encouraged the president to use diplomatic and political strategies to bring back democracy in Niger.

Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, Zamfara, Jigawa, Yobe, and Borno would also be impacted by military intervention in Niger, according to NSF.

“The emphasis, however, should be on political and diplomatic means to restore democratic government in the Niger Republic.

“We also take exception to the use of military force until other avenues, as mentioned above, are exhausted, as the consequences will be casualties among the innocent citizens who do their daily business. Besides, about seven northern states with a border with the Niger Republic will be negatively affected, namely Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, Zamfara, Jigawa, Yobe and Borno”.

The Niger military junta severed diplomatic ties with Nigeria, as Platinum Times Nigeria recalls, after the ECOWAS ambassador sent there to mediate peace failed to do so.

Mohamed Bazoum, the democratically elected president of Niger, was deposed by a military coup last month.

The West African region is still experiencing increasing tension.
