AFCON 2023: Salah’s late penalty secures point for Egypt against Mozambique
Egypt’s first-ever Africa Cup of Nations Group B match versus Mozambique was saved by Mohamed Salah’s injury-time penalty.
When Mostafa Mohamed put the Pharaohs ahead after just 89 seconds, a regulation victory appeared to be in the works.
Seven-time winners Egypt led the game early, but they were unable to play with much forward fluidity, and star player Mohamed Salah was unable to have a significant impact on the game.
The 31-year-old attacker for Liverpool has expressed his ambition to win his first Nations Cup after losing finals twice, notably in Cameroon two years ago. However, head coach Rui Vitoria will realize that his team needs to improve if Egypt is to have a chance of winning the tournament.
In the build-up to the first goal, Salah may have had the best impact when his miskick accidentally dropped to Mohamed. Ahead of the defending teammates, Mohamed was able to direct a low strike into the corner of the net with a spin.
Shortly after, Mohamed—who had been Egypt’s most threatening player in the first half—forced Mozambique goalkeeper Ernan to make a great save, and his knockdown also gave Trezeguet a chance to hit the post.
The Egyptian supporters, a large number of whom were flying Palestinian flags, anticipated additional goals.
In the first half, Witi had an opportunity for the Mambas, who were without star forward Geny Catamo of Sporting Lisbon due to suspension. Witi also forced Pharaohs keeper Mohamed El Shenawy to tip over.
