AFCON: Fierce battle in Group C as Guinea defeats Gambia

Guinea defeated Gambia 1-0 in the Africa Cup of Nations on Friday, putting them on the verge of advancing to the round of 16.

Camara, who plays club football in Greece, scored midway through the second half off an assist from Morgan Guilavogui to win the Group C match in the Ivorian capital Yamoussoukro.

Guinea had been the more dangerous team, despite being without ace attacker Serhou Guirassy, as they had been in their first 1-1 tie with Cameroon.

Mohamed Bayo, Guinea’s attacking leader in Guirassy’s absence, hit the post in the first half for a team looking to advance to the knockout stage for the third consecutive Cup of Nations.

The result places them second in the group with four points, two behind reigning champions Senegal, who defeated Cameroon 3-1 to go to the knockout phase.

Guinea only needs a draw against Senegal in their next encounter on Tuesday to qualify for the round of 16, but a win would see them advance as group winners.

Gambia, surprise quarter-finalists two years ago, has 0 points, but a win in their last group match against Cameroon might propel them to one of the best third-placed teams.
