Ban BBNaija – Benue Assembly tells NBC over Venita’s comment on Tiv

The Benue State House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to prohibit the popular reality television show Big Brother Naija from airing in Nigeria.

The decision was made during a plenary session presided over by Hon. Hyacinth Dajoh, Speaker of the House.

The proposition gathered traction after Hon. Manger Manger, the Tarka State Constituency representative, expressed worry about insulting remarks made by Venita Akpofure, a roommate on the show, concerning the Tiv ethnic group.

In addition to calling for the show to be banned, the House mandated that Akpofure apologize publicly to the Tiv ethnic community through two national dailies and television stations.

They also advised reporting her to the Inspector General of Police and filing legal action in a competent court to deter similar incidents.

Manger referenced Section 34 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution in his motion, underlining that every individual or group deserves respect for their dignity, a fundamental that must be respected and protected.

Manger raised concern about Venita, an Urhobo from Delta State, who made derogatory remarks.

She said that the Tiv people of Benue State entertain visitors and acquaintances by offering their wives.

Manger emphasized the significance of addressing the matter as soon as possible to avoid confusion and misrepresentation, especially since she was previously married to a Tiv man and had two children from the marriage.

The House intends to limit the possible harm caused by such utterances by assuring accuracy and understanding.
