Bellingham shines as Madrid beat Girona to extend top of the table point lead

Jude Bellingham scored twice before leaving injured as Real Madrid defeated championship contenders Girona to take five points ahead in La Liga.

Vinicius Junior’s spectacular long-range drive handed Madrid an early lead at the Bernabeu.

Bellingham then scored his first goal of the game off a great Vinicius pass, before converting his 20th of the season after halftime.

Rodrygo made it 4-0 before Joselu hit the post with a late penalty.

Bellingham has now scored more La Liga goals for Real Madrid than any other midfielder in a single season this century – but the England international’s night was cut short when he was forced off with an ankle problem.

He slumped to the ground after colliding with Pablo Torre and was treated on the field for several minutes before slowly rising to his feet.

Determined to keep going, the 20-year-old scored his second goal of the game after Paulo Gazzaniga saved Vinicius’ initial effort, but he was too injured to continue and was replaced by Brahim Diaz shortly after.

He was spotted on the Madrid bench with an ice pack strapped to his foot, but manager Carlo Ancelotti believes the injury is only a sprained ankle and that Bellingham would recover in time for Tuesday’s Champions League match against RB Leipzig.
