Carlos Alcaraz wins Wimbledon men’s singles final after defeating Djokovic

Novak Djokovic’s winning streak was broken by Carlos Alcaraz, who took the Wimbledon men’s singles crown.

To win the title for the first time, the 20-year-old Spaniard defeated his Serbian rival in a thrilling five-set contest, 1-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-1 3-6 6-4.

He persevered and came up with a series of breathtaking passing strokes to overcome one of the greatest players of all time after surviving a shaky opening set in which he only won one point.

Since 18-year-old Boris Becker won the second of his three Wimbledon titles in 1986, he is the youngest man to win the Challenge Cup.

The 2022 US Open was Alcaraz’s first grand slam victory. This is his second. He is still ranked first in the world.

With a win, he prevented Novak Djokovic from matching Roger Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon victories.

From the royal box on Center Court, the Princess of Wales, Prince George, and Princess Charlotte were there.

With the exception of the 2020 competition, which was postponed due to COVID, the number two seed was on course for his 24th major slam championship and his sixth straight Wimbledon triumph.

Alcaraz declared prior to the contest that facing a “legend from our sport” made the championship more memorable.

“I always say if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. Novak is one of them. It would be great if I can do it,” he said.

The previous time the two played each other was in the French Open semifinal, when Djokovic won the final two sets 6-1, 6-1.
