Cole Palmer’s goal gives Chelsea a point in a 4-4 thriller against Man City
Cole Palmer’s stoppage-time penalty cost Manchester City victory in a thrilling match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Fortunes swung both ways in a high-quality game played in perilous conditions.
With four minutes remaining, Rodri’s effort from the edge of the area was deflected off Thiago Silva and past Chelsea goalie Robert Sanchez.
Chelsea were not to be denied, as Palmer – a £40 million summer addition from Pep Guardiola’s side – remained calm despite the mayhem to beat Ederson from the spot, leaving City just a point clear of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League.
After 25 minutes, the reigning champions were awarded a penalty for Marc Cucurella’s pull on Erling Haaland, despite Chelsea’s claims that the full-back had been fouled first.
The penalty was easily converted by Haaland, but the hosts equalized four minutes later when Brazil centre-back Silva headed home Conor Gallagher’s corner at the near post.
Chelsea tied the game after 37 minutes when Raheem Sterling scored against his previous team, putting in Reece James’ cross following Josko Gvardiol’s error.
City, on the other hand, equalized on the stroke of halftime when the unmarked Manuel Akanji headed home a cross from Bernardo Silva.
City took the lead again two minutes after the break as Haaland scrambled in Julian Alvarez’s cross at the far post.
However, Chelsea fought back once again and rightly equalized in the 67th minute when Nicolas Jackson pounced after Ederson pushed out Gallagher’s low shot.
Guardiola’s team felt they had won it after Rodri’s lucky strike – until the late penalty drama concluded an enjoyable, eventful match.
Defender Ruben Dias was given a yellow card for a foul on Chelsea replacement Armando Broja, and Palmer’s cool finish tied the game.
