Coup: Tension as Burkina Faso, Mali sends delegation to Niger
The Malian army announced that a team from Mali and Burkina Faso is scheduled to arrive in Niamey, the capital of Niger, on Monday as a sign of solidarity amid the coup situation.
The combined delegation was announced by the Malian army via a tweet on Monday.
The tweet reads,
“Burkinaannouncement in a tweet Faso and Mali are sending a delegation to Niamey to show the solidarity of the two countries with the brotherly people of Niger.”
The interim administrations of Burkina Faso and Mali, which were put in place after the military seized control of those two nations by force in 2020 and 2022, respectively, also vowed their support for the Nigerien soldiers who deposed President Mohamed Bazoum.
Additionally, the two nations issued a warning that any military action in Niger would be seen as a declaration of war against them and result in Burkina Faso and Mali leaving the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
15 West African nations that make up the regional political and economic bloc known as ECOWAS have threatened to use force to impose order in Niger.
