Court fixes July 25 for trail of ex-CBN Gov. Emefiele

On July 25, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) suspended Governor, will appear before the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court.

Following accusations made against him by the Department of State Services (DSS), the troubled CBN chairman, who has been detained by the DSS, is scheduled to submit his plea before Justice Nicholas Oweibo.

You may recall that on June 10, a day after President Bola Tinubu had dismissed Emefiele from his position as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, security agency agents barged into his Ikoyi home in Lagos.

He was detained after being arrested, and the DSS has argued that his imprisonment was mandated by an Abuja Chief Magistrate Court.

But a group of human rights attorneys led by Mr. Maxwell Okpara and Mr. Ahmed Tijani criticized his ongoing imprisonment even as they charged the DSS of acting in violation of still-active court orders.

The legal professionals also filed a contempt complaint against Mr. Yusuf Bichi, director general of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Both Form 48, which notifies people of the repercussions of disobeying a court order, and Form 49, which asks the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, to commit a suspected contravenor to prison, were submitted.

Following a message the security agency released on its official Twitter account in which it referred to the group as “charge and bail lawyers” and supporters of the Indigenous People of Biafra, or IPOB, the organization demanded Bichi be fired.

Emefiele was accused by the DSS of violating Section 4 of the Firearms Laws of the Federation 2004 and Section 27 (1) (b) (i) of the same act by illegally possessing a single barrel shotgun (Jojeff Magnum 8371) without a license, according to the two-count charge marked FHC/L/437/2023.

He was also charged with unlawfully possessing 123 rounds of live ammunition (catridges).

The things were found, according to the security agency, when it searched Emefiele’s home at No. 3B Iru Close in Ikoyi, Lagos.
