Court remands 30 women for protesting Supreme Court verdict in Nasarawa

A Chief Magistrate Court in Lafia, Nasarawa State capital, has ordered the remand of 30 protesting women to the Correctional Centre on charges of violence and destruction of public buildings.
Protests occurred in the state capital following the Supreme Court’s recent decision to uphold Governor Abdullahi Sule’s election.
On Friday afternoon, Nigeria Police detained and arraigned the women, charging them of committing acts of violence, obstructing highways, and destroying public property.
The demonstrators reportedly caused significant traffic by blocking highways and setting tyres on fire.
The court also remanded eight other male suspects in the detention facility.
The male suspects are charged with blocking roadways, causing public disturbance, and destroying public infrastructure.
The identities of individuals in custody have yet to be published.
The court has scheduled a hearing on their bail applications for Monday, January 21.
According to Platinum Times, Nasarawa State Commissioner of Police Umar Shehu Nadada vowed to take strong action against anyone who engaged in violence prior to, during, or following the Supreme Court decision.
The warning was made during a peace accord ceremony for leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party.
