Court trashes arrest warrant on Amaechi, Tonye Cole, others

An arrest warrant against Rotimi Amaechi, a former minister of transportation, Tonye Cole, an APC candidate for state governor, Augustine Wokocha, a former commissioner for power, and three other people has been overturned by a court of appeals in Port Harcourt.

Remember that on May 17, 2023, a Port Harcourt High Court presided over by Justice Chinwedu Nwogu issued an arrest warrant for the defendants in a criminal case involving the sale of state property by the Rivers State Government.

In order to contest the High Court’s decision, the defendants went before the Appeal Court.

In a unanimous decision on the applications, a three-person panel chaired by Justice Joseph Ikyegh ruled that the High Court of Rivers State erred by continuing with the case even though the appeals court had already rejected the process’ validity.

The Appeal Court criticized the method of serving Amaechi and his co-defendants while rescinding the warrant of arrest order issued against them.

One of the attorneys for Amaechi, Cole, and the other defendants, Achinike Wobodo-Williams, expressed satisfaction with the decision in a statement to reporters outside the courthouse.
