A power battle between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, has resulted in this development during a volatile political period in the state.

Heavy machinery on site is apparently pulling down the building as the destruction started just moments ago.

The government led by Fubara is reportedly carrying out the demolition for renovations, but there are hints that it is being done for political reasons as well.

It should be recalled that the factional Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Barr. Ehie Edison, purportedly presided over a plenary session of the 10th Assembly today. Governor Fubara is well-liked by Ehie Edison.

The court ruling that proclaimed Ehie the rightful Speaker and disallowed his opponent, Martins Amaewhule, from asserting leadership is the reason for this session. It’s thought Nyesom Wike supports Amaewhule.

When part of the assembly complex was set on fire in October, it was purportedly done by Fubara’s supporters to stop the impeachment process from moving forward, which brought attention to the state’s unrest. President Tinubu’s intervention ultimately caused a halt in the process.
