Despite hardship, Buharia lauds Tinubu’s performance since assuming office, says Nigeria is complex
Former President Muhammadu Buhari has lauded President Bola Tinubu for his performance since taking office, despite the economic hardships faced by Nigerians across the country.
Buhari claims that there isn’t much anyone can do to help the country right now, citing Nigeria’s “so complex” nature.
The country’s economic problems worsened after Buhari departed office on May 29, 2023.
On the day of his inauguration, Tinubu said that his administration would no longer subsidise petrol, calling for a stop to the financing because it benefited neighboring countries.
His action increased the price of the Premium Motor Spirit from N185 to more than N600.
Furthermore, as part of his government’s financial sector reforms, the naira has been in a continuous free slide versus the dollar since the Central Bank of Nigeria floated the currency to move toward market-determined rates.
This action has caused the naira to be unstable in the market, with it trading between N1,400 and N1,900 per dollar.
Meanwhile, Nigerians led by organized labor have protested across the country in recent weeks in a show of defiance against the deteriorating circumstances that have pushed more Nigerians into poverty.
However, addressing on Sunday in Daura, Katsina State, where he received the comptroller-general and members of the Nigeria Customs Service management team, Buhari stated that running Nigeria is a difficult job for anyone.
He urged Nigerians to endure the country’s economic difficulties while supporting the current administration’s policies and objectives.
“I thank you very much for coming. I very much appreciate it. I thought Tinubu has done very well,” Buhari said.
“Nigeria is so complex. Really, there isn’t much anybody can do.”
