Disaster strikes Kenya as dam bursting kills 42

A dam burst early on Monday, resulting in floods that have killed no less than 42 people in the Mai Mahiu area of central Kenya.

The nation in East Africa is experiencing floods and heavy rains.

The governor of Nakuru County, Susan Kihika, confirmed the incident.

“Forty-two dead, it’s a conservative estimate. There are still more in the mud. We are working on recovery,” the governor said.

The dam burst near the Rift Valley town of Mai Mahiu, washing away houses and cutting off a road.

Officials have previously said that 76 people had lost their lives in Kenya since March, as heavier than usual rains batter East Africa, compounded by the El Nino weather pattern.

Recall that dozens of people were killed in May 2018 when a dam burst in Solai, also in Nakuru County, during torrential rains and floods.
