ECOWAS ministers meet as Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso leaves body

The Foreign Affairs Ministers of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) are gathering to address Burkina Faso, Mali, and the Niger Republic’s announced exit from the regional organization.

The summit at the ECOWAS Commission in Abuja will also discuss the political situation in Senegal, where the President postponed the presidential election, sparking widespread demonstrations.

According to ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Alieu Touray, the summit would address the three countries’ notification of withdrawal, as well as broader implementation.

Touray emphasized that, as a community, now is the best time for the sub-region to remain united, despite the hardships.

He reminded everyone that ECOWAS is a community rather than an institution.

He claimed that the countries’ assertions were unsubstantiated and premature.

Details will be provided shortly.
