EPL: Arsenal top of the table after Havertz late header against Brentford
Arsenal moved to the top of the Premier League following a thrilling win over Brentford thanks to substitute Kai Havertz’s late header.
Havertz’s 88th-minute strike saved Arsenal from a rather forgettable performance in Mikel Arteta’s 200th game in charge.
After Manchester City and Liverpool drew earlier in the day, the Gunners now lead the Premier League by one point.
Arsenal’s Leandro Trossard had a goal ruled out by the video assistance referee in the first half, but Brentford were only denied goals by outstanding clearances off the line from Declan Rice and Oleksandr Zinchenko.
Arteta has won more matches in his first 200 games in charge than any of the previous nine Arsenal managers, and his daring lineup selection here demonstrated his determination to earn three points.
However, the return of injured Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Jesus did not bear fruit in a rather plodding performance.
They increased the tempo in the second half, but Thomas Frank’s well-drilled defense repelled waves of attacks.
That was until Bukayo Saka’s piece of magic unlocked the door and Havertz produced his most meaningful contribution in an Arsenal shirt to head home at the back post.
