Former Eaglets Nigeria player Akinkunmi Amoo, 21, as been found guilty of rape in Denmark and as received a one-year prison term.
Osasu Obayiuwana, a former correspondent for BBC World Football, tweeted to confirm his sentencing.
Amoo’s sentencing date is June 23, 2023.
“Breaking: On Friday, a Copenhagen court sentenced striker Akinkunmi Amoo to one year in prison for sexual assault. Amoo plans to challenge the ruling, Osasu tweeted.
When the winger was hit with criminal accusations by Danish authorities in April, July, and August 2022, he was in the center of the controversy.
He was detained on September 10, 2022, and on October 7 he was freed on bond.
Details of the verdict from Friday’s trial were revealed by the Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet.
This is the outcome of the trial, which has been ongoing for the majority of June, in which a prominent Danish football player has been accused of rape in a sexual connection other than intercourse as well as attempted rape and violations of two additional women.
“It happens after he was found guilty of all three charges in the Copenhagen District Court by a dissenting magistrate on Friday afternoon, and it was a shaken man who received his sentence as he stood there in the middle of the room and listened to the outcome.
“An unconditional prison sentence for one year.
“In the same case, the name ban in the case was extended because the defense and the convicted appealed the verdict on the spot. Ekstra Bladet protested against the continued name ban, but the court did not accept it.
“It is not known when the appeal will go to court.”
The 21-year-old was part of the Golden Eaglets squad that finished fourth at the 2019 U-17 AFCON.
Also, he featured at the U-17 World Cup where the Eaglets got knocked out in the round of 16.
His good showing at the World Cup earned him a move to Swedish side Hammarby before switching to FC Copenhagen in January 2022 for 4.4m.
Last season, he made only two league appearances for the Danish outfit.
