FCTA to prosecute 149 impounded vehicle owners
The owners of 149 impounded automobiles, 100 tricycles, and motorbikes in the FCT will come before a mobile court for various traffic violations, according to the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).
After inspecting the impounded automobiles, Dr Abdulateef Bello, Director, FCTA Directorate of Road Traffic Services, widely known as automobiles Inspection Officers (VIO), revealed this in Abuja on Friday.
Bello, who visited several of the VIO Commands where the seized automobiles, tricycles, and motorbikes were detained, stated that the owners will pay a high price for their transgressions.
He explained that the offenses include illegal parking, driving against traffic, running unregistered and unpainted taxis, and operating illegal motor parks.
“I always advise that it is cheaper to be on the side of the law to obey simple rules and regulations.
“We have asked commercial motorists to register and operate within the defined routes and motor parks and not to pick indiscriminately from the road corridors.
“We have also told the tricycle operators to operate within the confines of the road plan, already agreed upon.
“They are not supposed to come into the city. They are supposed to transport people that are going into estates and towards suburbs of the city,” he said.
He stated that traffic restrictions had been examined, and that fines would be raised as well.
He stated that when traffic offenders face mobile court, they will suffer severe penalties, “but I am confident it will serve as a deterrent.”
The director stated that the directorate was working with the Federal Capital Territory Administration’s Transport Secretariat to analyze existing road traffic policies on traffic management.
This, he claims, will enable effective road traffic management regulation.
