Fear of the unknown by Ogwezi Leonard Onyemechi

Growing up can be so tasking. It evolves with the mystery that comes with the common word “fear”, especially one that stems from our inability to provide explanation to numerous phenomena of life.
Perhaps fear begins from the moment of birth.
It could be that babies cry immediately they are delivered because they are scared of an unknown world they are being exposed to.
Thus, they outgrow that fear by becoming familiar with the feeling of tender touches and cuddles. This idea might sound awkward but it could be psychological and philosophical.
Fear, as a psychological entity, can be limited and controlled to the barest minimum except you allow it to get the better of you.
That is why there are a number of instances in which people speak of their phobia for nonthreatening things like rodents, cockroaches and some, even their shadows.
These things scare some persons to the bone that they have to seek for lasting solutions because of the level of damage that has been done to their minds. When one allows things within their reach to grow beyond control, it messes with one’s mind.
While growing up, I was petrified of the night because of my exposure to some movies and stories of evil always being at play during night times.
Because of that, I’d rather wet myself than wake up in the dark of night because of my fear of the possible things that might hurt me during the night.
In the early 2000’s, I watched a Nollywood movie produced in the early/mid 1990’s titled ‘Karashika’ that was traumatic to me. It played in my mind each time I was going to sleep because of the evil and demonic scenes attached to the movie.
But that fear has since fiddled away. Obviously, my family didn’t know about this, but it was my first fight of early stage of life as a kid, amusing right?
The above example of my struggle as a kid is similar to our inability as adults to sometimes tackle the challenges we encounter in our lives due to fear.
Most times, we are afraid of making decisions that can be life changing, simply because we are too cautious and fearful of what we might encounter or lose in the process.
Personally, I see myself as someone who is conservative when it comes to making decisions at a critical time.
My indecisiveness paints me as a gentleman sitting on the fence, but it has led to some big losses for me. This is another fear that I have been working on and trying to overcome.
What is your fear? It can come in different ways. Whatever it is, you have to recognize it today by taking charge and turning it into courage.
Fear can come up at any point in time of our lives. It could arise because you don’t want to lose an investment, or because you feel you might be robbed, kidnapped or involved in an accident when travelling.
Whatever they are, strive to overcome them because they are mere thoughts of uncertainty that we’ve allowed to battle with our minds and hinder our growth.
