Police van burnt, traders attacked as Gunmen enforce sit-at-home in Ebonyi

In the Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State’s Ukwuagba-Ngbo Community, gunmen who were executing the sit-at-home order on Tuesday burned a police patrol van on fire.

A splinter group of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), led by Simon Ekpa, had proclaimed a one-week sit-at-home order, and the gunmen’s conduct was reportedly part of efforts to compel compliance.

According to reports, the attackers rushed a nearby police roadblock and told the on-duty officers to flee as they set fire to the vehicle.

Remember how the IPOB splinter group in the previous week called for a one-week sit-in across the South-East geopolitical zone?

In addition to the attack on the Ukwuagba-Ngbo region of the state, the gunmen reportedly approached the Ebonyi State University’s Ishieke Campus and fired intermittently into the air.

On Tuesday, they gave orders for motorcycle riders and market vendors to cease operations.

Ikechukwu Onwe, the chairman of the Ohaukwu Council Area, denounced the attacks and urged stakeholders to work together to put an end to the criminal activity in the region.

At a security council meeting held on Tuesday at the council’s headquarters in Ezzangbo, Onwe pledged to take all necessary steps to capture the criminals.

In the meantime, the Ebonyi State Government has urged citizens to carry on with their regular activities, claiming that the situation is under control.

The Ebonyi State Government has noted with dismay, uneasiness in several regions of the state following actions of unidentified gunmen, according to a statement signed by Jude Okpor, the Commissioner for Information and State Orientation.

Therefore, the government advises the general population to carry on with their legal obligations because security personnel are keeping an eye on the situation.
