FG approves 25% wage increase for lecturers in federal institutions

The Federal Government has approved a 25% wage increase for lecturers in all federal universities.

When it boosted Professors’ salary to 35%, the government protested to the payment of 25% to lecturers in tertiary institutions.

However, in a circular dated September 21, 2023, issued by the Auditor General of the Federation to Polytechnics and Colleges of Education, the Auditor General stated that the implementation was approved by the Presidential Committee on Salaries at its 13th meeting.

The decision was made after “taking into consideration, various stages of collective bargaining,” according to the circular.

The circular followed a similar letter dated September 14, 2023 from the Chairman of the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission (NSIWC).

The letter, addressed to Tahir Mamman, Minister of Education, stated that the government has boosted the salaries of employees at federal government institutions.

According to the letter signed by Ekpo Nta, Chairman of the Commission, the previously agreed 23.5% was increased to 25%.

In the letter, Nta expressed satisfaction with the Minister’s “informal discussions,” adding that “we shall endeavor to support all your efforts aimed at repositioning the education sector.”

Other circulars referring to the four salary structures in Universities, Polytechnics, and Colleges of Education were also included in the letter.

Remember that Adamu Adamu, the former Minister of Education, insisted that the Federal Government could only afford a 23.5 percent salary increase for all categories of employees in Federal Universities, with the exception of professors, who would receive a 35% raise.
