Fubara cautions Rivers Police against re-introduction of SARS

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has advised the police against reactivating the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), which has been disbanded.

Following reports of police personnel acting like SARS in Port Harcourt and other locations, some media users have accused the police of profiling and making indiscriminate arrests.

Fubara raised the issue on Friday at the Government House during a meeting with the new Commissioner of Police, Nwoyi Polycarp Emeka.

The governor urged the commissioner to investigate the complaints and halt any form of harassment of law-abiding individuals.

“The importance of security is a collective responsibility of all stakeholders. We urge you to get to the bottom of complaints from citizens,” he said.

Fubara assured of his administration’s commitment to sustain support for security agencies to safeguard lives and property.

The governor further charged the CP to be firm, forthright and tackle crimes and criminality with his wealth of experience.

“Let your familiarity with Rivers security terrain be an advantage to effectively combat crime and criminalities in the state,” he added.

The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof, Zacchaeus Adango and relevant government agencies have been directed to collaborate with the police and other security arms.
