Gov Abba Yusuf defence opening stalled over absence of witness

Abba Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) was unable to present his case in the Kano State Election Petition Tribunal on Friday because three witnesses were not present.

The NNPP candidate was declared the winner of the March 18 election, and the APC is contesting that decision.

INEC, Yusuf, and the NNPP are among the respondents in the case before the tribunal.

The three witnesses they had invited were not present, Yusuf’s attorney, Mr. Eyitayo Fatigun SAN, informed the court when the petition was summoned.

“We apologize since the three witnesses had trouble with their flights from Abuja to Kano. My Lord, we want a postponement, replied Fatigun.

Both John Olusola SAN, counsel to the NNPP, and Emmanuel Osayomi, counsel to INEC, did not object to the prayer.

Offiong Offiong SAN, the petitioner’s attorney, likewise did not object to the second respondent’s motion for an adjournment.

According to NAN, the APC finished its case on July 15 after questioning 32 witnesses, and INEC closed its case on July 21.

For the NNPP to present its case, Justice Oluyemi Akintan-Osadebay postponed the hearing to Saturday.
