Gunmen abduct travellers in Cross River, shoot three, whisk away others

The police in Cross River have confirmed the kidnapping of some passengers near Nde 3 Corners Akparabong Junction in the state’s Ikom Local Government Area.

The passengers, who were on a transit, were claimed to have been ambushed by gunmen who shot at their vehicles, wounded three and abducting an indeterminate number.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Irene Ugbo, who confirmed the event, declined to provide information about the attack, but did say it happened on Sunday.

Ugbo stated that attempts were being made to secure the release of the abducted passengers as well as to prevent a repeat of the occurrence in the area.

Mr James Ese, a community resident, said the three injured people were rushed to an unidentified hospital for treatment.

Ese stated that in the last three weeks, the Akparabong Junction had become a nightmare for cars and commuters.

While accusing herders of being responsible for practically daily road attacks, he urged security agencies to be aware of their responsibilities.

“We want the police to rise up to the challenge and end this menace to passengers in the last three weeks.

“This particular area of the Nde 3 Corners Akparabong Junction has become a bloodbath spot owing to kidnapping activities with over four deaths, including a baby, recorded these past weeks,” he said. (Text, excluding headline: NAN)
