House of Reps break silence on alleged N200 million SUVs to members

Media reports that each member will receive a sports utility vehicle (SUV) worth N200 million have been called a little “exaggerated” by the House of Representatives.
The automobiles that would be given to members are not for personal use, the House stated in a statement by its spokesperson Akin Rotimi on Sunday.
The statement claims that the automobiles belong to the members and that they must be given back when their employment is over.
According to Rotimi, purchasing a working vehicle is not unique to the legislature because the executive branch’s appointees have also acquired cars.
We can affirm that the National Assembly administration is in the stepwise process of acquiring and distributing working automobiles to honorable members over the coming weeks and months, despite the fact that numerous versions of this story contain varying exaggerations, he stated.
He clarified that after their term, members must return the cars, albeit they are allowed to keep them if they are ready to pay.
“For the duration of the 10th assembly (2023 – 2027), the vehicles shall remain the property of the National Assembly.
“At the expiration of the tenure of the 10th Assembly in 2027, should the extant assets deboarding policy of government still be in place, honourable members may have the option of making payment for the outstanding value of the vehicles to government coffers before they can become theirs, otherwise it remains the property of the National Assembly,” he added.
The statement failed to address the exact cost of the vehicles.
