Jugbe behind ‘clerical error’ nominated by NJC for elevation to Supreme Court

The National Judicial Council, NJC, has proposed the appointment of 11 Supreme Court justices, including Justice Moore Aseimo A. Adumein, who signed the contentious Kano governorship election appeal decision.

In its November 17 decision, read by Mr Adumein, the Court of Appeal confirmed the Kano Governorship Election Petition Tribunal’s decision, pronouncing APC candidate Nasiru Gawuna the victor of the state’s governorship election.

The court, however, contradicted itself four days later when it produced the certified true copy of the judgment.

In the CTC, which was signed by all three justices, the appeal court overturned the tribunal’s decision and awarded the NNPP N1,000,0000 in costs against the APC.

Although the appeal court disregarded the contradicting declarations as “clerical errors,” the situation prompted national indignation, with Nigerians demanding an investigation.

However, according to a statement issued Wednesday by the NJC’s head of information, Soji Oye, the council, which is in charge of punishing erring judges and promoting deserving ones, nominated Mr Adumein for promotion to the nation’s highest court.

Mr. Oye stated that after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approves their suggestion and the Senate certifies their appointment, all suggested candidates for the Supreme Court bench will be sworn in.

According to him, the various heads of court proposed would be sworn in when their appointments were approved by their respective state governors and confirmed by their respective state Houses of Assembly.

The statement read,

“The NJC, at its 104th meeting on Wednesday, December 6 considered the list of candidates presented by its Interview Committee and at the end of deliberations, recommended the under-listed names of successful candidates as heads of courts and other judicial officers for the Federal and State Courts in Nigeria.”
