Just In: Screening of service chiefs commences at Senate
The service chiefs announced by President Bola Tinubu are currently being screened by the Nigerian senate.
The candidates for service chief include Taoreed Lagbaja as chief of the army, Christopher Musa as chief of the defense staff, Emmanuel Ogalla as chief of the navy, and Hassan Abubakar as chief of the air force.
Tinubu requested the national assembly’s approval of the security chiefs in a letter last week.
He based his demand on the armed forces act, section 18(1), CAP A20 laws of the federation of Nigeria, 2004.
The nominees were given some time to introduce themselves when they appeared before the senators on Wednesday.
They then briefly discussed their professional backgrounds, the nation’s struggles with security issues, and their plans to address them.
Lagbaja declared he would cooperate with other heads of security to guarantee the safety of the nation.
“I have identified some pillars on which my leadership will rest and that includes sound leadership. I have identified and will work with my fellow service chiefs and other security agencies,” he said.
On his part, Ogalla said: “I have served in various capacities. I wish to state that if given the opportunity to serve as the chief of naval staff, I will give my best. I fully understand the challenges facing the navy”.
The screening has gone into a closed session.
