Kebbi Government shuts down mining activities over insecurity

Following the rise of insecurity in the state, the Kebbi State Government has stopped all mining activity.

According to a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Yakubu Tafida, the prohibition was enacted to protect lives and property, including mining workers and host communities.

He stated that the state administration was aware that mining was on the exclusive legislative list, but took action after conducting a thorough review of the present security situation.

According to him, the state administration believes it is critical to prioritize the protection and security of its inhabitants and to prevent unauthorised foreigners from converting mine fields into breeding grounds for criminals.

“This has happened in other neighbouring states, which we want to avert,” he said.

He noted that the state government has resolved to address the concerns by conducting a thorough examination and enforcing tough laws in order to encourage responsible mining, protect the environment, increase revenue creation, and, most importantly, protect lives.
