Mbappe scores twice against Real Sociedad as PSG advance to quarter-final stage
Kylian Mbappe scored twice as Paris St-Germain defeated Real Sociedad to advance to the Champions League quarterfinals.
With the journey to San Sebastian described as a potentially difficult second leg for PSG to manage, all eyes were on Mbappe, who has agreed to join Real Madrid this summer.
And the France forward delivered a great display, scoring his 27th and 28th goals of the season for Luis Enrique’s team.
The 25-year-old gave the hosts an early warning by sprinting past Hamari Traore to set up a chance for Bradley Barcola, which was superbly stopped by home goalkeeper Alex Remiro.
Six minutes later, Mbappe opened his account for the evening, latching on to Ousmane Dembele’s ball and testing home defender Igor Zubeldia before blasting a right-foot effort into the bottom-right corner with such strength and perfection that it briefly dislodged the netting.
Mbappe’s second goal of the night came just after the break, as he raced down the left to receive Lee Kang-in’s cross and then emphatically sent a disguised low shot past Remiro at the near post.
It was no more than the Parisiens deserved, with Imanol Alguacil’s Sociedad team being far too quiet in the early rounds and only regaining momentum after falling four goals behind on aggregate.
By then, it was too late, and Mikel Merino’s determined effort in the final minutes was only a consolation.
The draw for the competition’s last eight will take place on Friday, March 15 (11:00 GMT).
