Minutes after release from DSS custody, EFCC allegedly picks up Emefiele
The Department of State Services (DSS) reportedly released Godwin Emefiele, the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), on Thursday.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) then reportedly picked him up.
Dele Oyewale, the EFCC spokesperson, merely responded, “I am yet to be briefed on the matter,” when Platinum Times contacted him on Friday regarding the development.
Media reports claim that Emefiele is now being questioned at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja, despite the lack of official confirmation.
Since President Bola Tinubu suspended Emefiele in June, the DSS has been in charge of him.
The DSS declared that Emefiele was under its custody for “some investigative reasons” following his suspension.
When he appeared in front of a Federal High Court in Lagos on July 25, he was charged with two counts of “illegal possession” of guns.
Afterwards, N20 million in bail was given to him.
The two-count charge was withdrawn by the Federal Government on August 17, leading to its dismissal.
The Federal Government, however, filed 20 more allegations against Emefiele, alleging that he had planned to commit procurement fraud and other crimes.
On September 22, following Olayemi Cardoso’s appointment and confirmation as the top bank’s substantive governor, the CBN formally acknowledged Emefiele’s departure.
