Niger Junta names Ali Mahaman as Prime Minister
Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, the country manager for Chad for the African Development Bank (AfDB), has been appointed prime minister by the junta in the Niger Republic.
The new prime minister of the nation formerly held the positions of economy and finance minister.
The announcement was made on television late on Monday by a representative of the military junta headed by General Abdourahmane Tchiani.
Zeine, 58, was Mamadou Tandja’s finance minister from 1999 until 2010, following the restoration of civilian administration in the nation.
Zeine, who formerly held the position of AFDB national manager in Gabon and Ivory Coast, is anticipated to oversee the consultation process for the election of a new administration.
Recall that on July 26, 2023, the military overthrew President Mohamed Bazoum’s democratically elected administration and suspended the constitution.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), headed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, gave the coup plotters a deadline to bring back Bazoum that recently expired.
After the military chiefs refused its ultimatum to surrender power, the regional organization is holding another emergency conference on Thursday in Nigeria to discuss the political crisis in Niger.
