No going back on planned indefinite strike – TUC
On Wednesday, the Trade Union Congress, (TUC), stated that there will be no going back on the organized labor proposed indefinite strike in the Country.
According to Platinum Times, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the TUC announced on Tuesday that the nation’s economy would shut down starting on October 3 in order to further press their demands on the Federal Government.
The government is being urged by the organized labor to take steps to lessen the hardship caused by the elimination of fuel subsidies.
Numerous discussions between the unions and the government have resulted in little progress.
Festus Osifo, the president of the TUC, said on Arise TV on Wednesday that a strike is the last option because all other options to advance the goals of organized labor have been exhausted.
Osifo asserts that President Bola Tinubu has had sufficient time to develop palliatives that would lessen the impact of the elimination of subsidies.
He said,
“Strike is always our last resort and that is why we embarked on this long journey. It was about four months ago that the fuel subsidy was removed.
“For any government that’s concerned about the plight of the people, four months is sufficient time for them to have designed a framework for the way forward.
“So for the House of Representatives that said we should be patient, we have earlier met with the Senate President who promised us that he was going to meet with the President and get back to us in one week but up till now, we have not heard from him.
“We have exhausted all the tools we have and that is why we are deploring the last option.”
