PL: West Ham downs Arsenal 2-0 at Emirates Stadium

West Ham upset Arsenal for a third consecutive Premier League victory, denting the Gunners’ title challenge.

West Ham put on a merciless performance, converting two of their three attempts on goal, while Arsenal squandered a slew of chances, missing out on the chance to go top of the league.

Tomas Soucek shot in Jarrod Bowen’s cutback, and while the ball may have gone out of play during the buildup, there was insufficient evidence for the video assistance referee to overturn the goal.

That gave West Ham a first-half advantage, which was increased in the 55th minute when former Arsenal centre-back Konstantinos Mavropanos deftly headed in a corner.

Arsenal failed to respond despite having plenty of possession and pressure.

And their dreadful night was nearly made worse when Declan Rice gave away a penalty in the dying minute of injury time, but David Raya saved Said Benrahma’s shot.

The win puts Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal second in the table, two points behind league leaders Liverpool, while West Ham finishes the year with 33 points, their greatest total at the midway point of a Premier League season.
