Premier League match halted as player collapses on pitch

Luton Town’s Premier League match against Bournemouth has been called off after captain Tom Lockyer fell on the field.

Both sets of players were removed midway through the second half to allow Lockyer to receive medical attention.

After a few minutes, he was carried away on a stretcher, with applause from all four sides of the ground.

The 29-year-old defender was later described as “alert and responsive” in reports from the field.

Lockyer collapsed during the play-off final victory against Coventry in May and was transported to the hospital.

Following heart surgery, he was given the green light to return to the field in June.

After the game was called off, both the Luton Town and Bournemouth players returned to the field to salute the fans.

The Premier League said in a statement:

“The match between AFC Bournemouth and Luton Town FC has been abandoned due to a player medical incident.

“Our thoughts are with Tom Lockyer and all players involved in today’s match.”
