Reps pledges to probe N62bn FG HIV/AIDS intervention funds
The House of Representatives has promised to look into the use and impact of N62 billion in federal government intervention monies invested in HIV/AIDS control programs.
It further stated that the probe would include cash contributed by overseas donor organizations to the Leprosy, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Control Programme during the administration of Muhammadu Buhari.
Amobi Ogah, Chairman of the House Committee on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Leprosy, and Malaria, revealed this Thursday during the committee’s oversight visit.
He was disappointed by the absence of the national coordinators of the National Malaria Control Programme and the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programmes from the committee’s oversight of the two agencies.
During the visit, most members of the committee voiced concern about the incidence of HIV/AIDS infections as reported by NACA, and the lawmakers encouraged the agency to do more to educate rural residents about the disease.
According to data from NACA’s National HIV/AIDS Impact Survey, two out of every ten and three out of every fifteen people sampled and tested have contracted the lethal disease in most states of the federation.
