September G20 Summit: Indian Government invites President Tinubu
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has received an invitation from the Indian government to the G20 summit.
India will host the G20 summit between September 9 and 10, 2023.
In 2023, India will hold the G20 presidency.
The G20 brings together the largest and most crucial economies in the world. Its members account for two-thirds of the world’s population, 75% of international trade, and 85% of the global GDP.
Since the Global Financial Crisis of 1997–1998 when the group was founded in 1999, leaders have gathered for an annual G20 Leaders’ Summit.
In addition to the summit, working groups, ministerial meetings, Sherpa meetings, and special events are scheduled all year round.
Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States, and the European Union are the other members of the G20.
The presidency invites visiting nations to take part each year. Spain is welcomed as a frequent visitor.
Amb. Shri G. Balasubramanian, the Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, indicated that channels of contact had already been formed between the two nations in order to facilitate President Tinubu’s attendance at the summit.
In addition, the ambassador praised Nigeria’s participation in the more than 140 sessions that have been held thus far, noting that it had been really positive.
He said, “So in that connection, we are expecting His Excellency Mr. Bola Tinubu, the president of Nigeria to visit India for the forthcoming G20. The summit in India is on 9th and 10th of September this year.
“So this is something that we are working closely with Nigerian authorities.
“We have had more than 140 meetings from December till now and we are very satisfied with the participation of Nigeria in the G20 meetings and at the ministerial level, working group level, engagement group level, and so on and so forth.”
He stressed the historic relationship between both countries.
“We are expecting the current president to also visit India.
I will come to the background just in a while now.
We assumed that given the special relationship that we have had with Nigeria for the past many years, when we took over the presidency of G20 in December 2022.
We invited Nigeria as a guest country for the first time to the G20. So, that itself reflects the strength of the relationship, political relationship and the close cooperation that we have been having.”
