UCL: Kane nets double as Bayern beats Lazio to clinch quarter-final spot
Harry Kane scored twice to help Bayern Munich overcome a first-leg deficit against Lazio and reach the Champions League quarter-finals.
Bayern appeared to be in for a disappointing night after trailing 1-0 in Rome after the first leg, until Kane’s header leveled the aggregate score.
Long-serving Thomas Muller extended the lead with another header.
Kane scored from close range to make it 3-1 on aggregate after Leroy Sane’s attempt was parried into his path.
Bayern made an amazing turnaround, and Kane hopes the outcome will help improve Bayern’s fortunes after a painfully dismal domestic season.
“This is the perfect evening for us. “It was a big game,” he explained.
“Of course, we know we need to improve, but evenings like this may completely change the season. I’m very proud of the boys, and we just need to keep the momentum continuing.
“It was a pivotal moment in our season. Everyone was gazing at us, wondering how we would respond after the first leg.
“Hopefully we can use this as a turning point for the rest of the season.”
Thomas Tuchel’s side was facing their first season without a major prize since 2011-12.
However, this victory maintains Tuchel’s ambitions of leading Bayern to a seventh European crown alive until the end of the season, when the former Chelsea manager departs.
The quarter-final draw takes held on March 15.
