UK court orders Ibori’s lawyer to pay £28m

An ex-lawyer of James Ibori, the former governor of Delta State, was ordered by a court in the United Kingdom, UK, to pay £28 million for aiding in the concealment of monies obtained illegally.
Bhadresh Gohil, the lawyer who is also Indian, was found guilty in 2010 on 13 counts of money laundering and other offenses related to his assistance to Ibori in concealing the proceeds of illegal activity.
Gohil was given a ten-year prison term in 2010, and he has already completed half of it.
Reuters reports that Gohil was given a Monday deadline to pay more than £28 million or risk receiving a second six-year sentence.
The court’s decision was made after Ibori was told last week that he had to pay £101.5 million ($130 million) or risk receiving an eight-year sentence, according to Platinum Times Nigeria.
Ibori had pledged to challenge the UK court’s decision, nevertheless.
