3. Recent Updates on the Cash Grant Program

The Nigerian government will start making serious moves to broaden the scope of the cash award program in September 2023. Mr. Shubham Chaudhuri from the World Bank recently met with Dr. Betta Edu, who is in charge of programs to reduce poverty, in Abuja. They talked about the following program elements:

increasing the recipients’ list.
relaunching the financial assistance program.
distributing the 800 million USD designated for this effort.
They also looked into joint ventures for activities like the Humanitarian Dialogue and the establishment of the Renewed Hope Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation Trust Fund. This fund will get funding from a variety of sources, such as government budgets, foreign donations, taxes, and assistance from private businesses. The World Bank has promised to help expand the program’s beneficiaries and meet the goals President Tinubu has set for it.

Last but not least, the federal department of humanitarian affairs developed the Rapid Response Register (RRR) initiative with help from the World Bank to assist urban inhabitants who were negatively impacted by COVID-19. A total of N30,000 will be given to these people over the course of six months, distributed as N5,000 monthly payments. The National Cash Transfer Office’s mission is to regularly provide poor families in Nigeria, especially the most vulnerable, with financial support.

In conclusion, these programs show the government’s dedication to eradicating poverty and helping those in need, with an emphasis on metropolitan regions and those impacted by the current pandemic.
