11 months after clocking retirement age, ACGI Babangida Usman refuses to vacate office

Babangida Usman, the Assistant Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) who oversees the organization’s Human Resources Management (HRM), has declined to leave her position 11 months after reaching retirement age, according to information exclusively obtained by The Discoverer Nigeria.

However, the development is causing tension inside the Service, therefore a group of Concered Immigration Officers hired a lawyer to file a petition with Dr. Olubunmi Ojo, the Minister of Interior.

ACG Babangida Usman reportedly registered with the Nigeria Immigration Service on October 1, 1989, and provided his birthdate of November 23, 1962, on official passports, IPPIS records, and email address BABANMAMA62@gmail.com.

The passport copies that our correspondent was able to obtain for Mr. Usman have the following numbers: F00014228, F00026447, and F00502938. They were issued on January 25, 2011 (expiration date: January 24, 2016); August 12, 2015 (expiration date: August 11, 2020); and July 13, 2020 (expiration date: July 12, 2025).

In contrast to the Civil Service Rules (CSR), which state that an officer must retire at age 60, Babangida Usman, NIS No. 9728, has chosen to stay in office.

Our reporter was informed by a trustworthy source that Babangida Usman was scheduled to retire on November 23, 2022, the day he turned 60.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, a senior officer stated that a number of Nigeria Immigration Service officers who are concerned have promised to follow the case through to a reasonable conclusion.

According to the source, the Concerned Officers have hired a renowned attorney from Abuja to represent them in their petition to Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Interior Minister, who also serves as the Chairman of the Civil Defense, Corrections, Fire, and Immigration Services Board.

The officer revealed that the concerned group had briefed their attorney to demand that the Honorable Minister take immediate, necessary action. They urged him to order the affected top officer to proceed with immediate compulsory retirement and to return all money that he has earned illegally since November 23, 2022, to date.

The source said:

“The action of the group would put an end to the fraudulent act of some unscrupulous officers refusing to proceed on retirement as and when due and continue to unduly enjoy salaries and allowances from tax payers’ money.

“The group is of the opinion that ACG Babangida Usman will be the last to engage in this irresponsible act of fraudulently staying glued to office at the detriment of other officers. They warned him to waste no time in toeing the path of reason by proceeding on his long overdue retirement or he should be ready to face series of actions that would sorely embarrass and injure his reputation.”
