$500,000 bribe: Supreme Court upholds Farouk Lawan’s five-year prison conviction
The Supreme Court upheld the five-year prison sentence imposed by the Court of Appeal on Farouk Lawan, a former member of the House of Representatives.
Lawan was convicted and sentenced to prison in 2021 after receiving a $500,000 bribe from Femi Otedola, Chairman of Zenon Petroleum and Gas Ltd.
On Friday, a five-member panel unanimously affirmed the Court of Appeal’s 2022 decision, which sustained Lawan’s five-year sentence for only count three of the three-count accusation on which he was tried at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory.
In the lead judgment, drafted by Justice John Okoro but read on Friday by Justice Tijjani Abubakar, the highest court determined that Lawan’s appeal was without merit and dismissed it.
